Have you ever wondered how to make homemade whipped topping? When I was browsing the freezer section of the grocery store, my eyes landed on the tub of whipped topping and I instantly wanted to make my own low-carb version.

I have to admit, sometimes I even grab a spoonful of it! It tastes that delicious. I love how light and fluffy it is! It’s better than a mousse or a pudding because I can use it on so many other things.

In fact, the best thing about making homemade keto whipped cream is that you know exactly what is in it, and you can control how sweet it tastes. No more standing in the grocery store trying to read the nutrition label and feeling confused at the long list of ingredients.

I used really simple ingredients and the entire process is so easy that you’ll wonder why you haven’t made this before.

Ingredients Needed For Keto Whipped Cream

You might be surprised that there are only 4 ingredients in this recipe! The name is very descriptive because it really is just whipped cream.

Heavy Cream

To make this recipe, use full-fat heavy whipping cream. On the keto diet, you want to make sure you are eating plenty of healthy fats, and one of the sources of this can be dairy.

Sweetener

In order for it to have a fluffy texture, you want to use a powdered sweetener. I suggest using one that is a confectioners’ sugar substitute like Swerve Confectioners’ Sugar Substitute. It blends into the cream better without leaving any grainy texture behind.

Spices

Other than the vanilla extract, you don’t really have to add more spices. I added a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg just to give it a deeper flavor profile. I think the nuttiness of the cinnamon rounds out the sweetness of the cream and sugar substitute.

Quick Tips:

  • Chill the cream. When you use chilled heavy whipping cream, it whips up better and has a better texture.
  • Use an electric mixer. Yes, it is possible to whisk it by hand, but that will take a lot of time and effort. It’s just easier to use an electric hand mixer or a stand mixer.
  • Do not overwhip the cream. Just whip it until you see soft peaks forming. If you overmix it, you will begin to make butter.
  • Use coconut cream. If you have a dairy intolerance, you can substitute coconut cream for heavy cream. It will have a slightly nuttier texture but still whips up beautifully.

Overall, this is a pretty easy recipe. Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Then, beat them on high until soft peaks form.

How To Use Homemade Whipped Cream

This is basically an all-purpose dessert topping; you can use it in so many different ways!

As you can see in the photo below, one of my favorite ways to use my keto whipped cream is as a topping for my pumpkin spice latte.

I also think it tastes amazing on top of my keto cheesecakes. Try it on my keto oreo cookies and cream cheesecake. You won’t believe that the entire thing is keto-friendly!

Add a dollop of whipped cream on top of chocolate pudding. The combination is a match made in heaven.

You can also use it instead of frosting on top of cakes or as a filling inside sandwich cookies. Be creative and try a bunch of different things!

Before we get to the recipe, I wanted to answer a few questions people often ask about how to make a low-carb whipped cream topping.

Are heavy whipping cream and heavy cream the same thing?

Yes, they are essentially the same thing because they are both made from milk fat. Heavy whipping cream will hold its shape better, so I recommend using it in this recipe.

If you use whipping cream, it will give you a lighter texture. This can still be delicious, it just isn’t recommended if you are going to use it for fillings.

How do you store homemade whipped cream topping?

This whipped cream topping will last up to 3 days in the refrigerator, so I suggest only making as much as you think you’ll use very quickly. The best way to store homemade whipped cream topping is in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

I like to store my whipped cream in a mason jar with a lid that screws on tightly. I like that I can see into the jar so I know what it is and the lid keeps it fresh for the entire 3 days.

If you want to store it longer, just freeze dollops of it on a lined cookie sheet. Then wrap each frozen portion individually in plastic wrap and store them in an airtight container. They will keep up to 2 months in the freezer.

Can you make whipped cream in a food processor?

Yes, you can make keto whipped cream in a food processor.

Here’s how to do just that:

  1. Place the standard “S” blade in the food processor.
  2. Pour the ingredients into the food processor’s bowl.
  3. Process on high until soft peaks form. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes.

How do you make flavored whipped cream topping?

It’s easy to make different flavors of whipped cream toppings to go with your low-carb desserts. Instead of vanilla extract, use a different one.

For example, make a mint whipped cream topping with mint extract. Or, make your whipped cream topping taste like peppermint with peppermint extract.

If you want it to have a nuttier flavor, add a dash of almond extract to it. It’s so fun to play around with different flavors!
