One of my favorite things to eat at Mexican restaurants before the keto diet was always the chips and salsa. Now that I enjoy eating low-carb recipes, I discovered a way to continue eating this zesty snack.

I first tried out making my own low-carb salsa using cucumber and it was delicious! BUT, every once in a while, I get a craving for some fresh tomato salsa, just like the. one at the Mexican restaurants.

So, I made my own keto salsa! My recipe only has 4g net carbs in each serving.

The only part of this recipe that has the most sugar/carbs is the tomatoes. Everything else is really low in carbs and packed with flavor. You are going to love this recipe!

Yes, you can call it either pico de gallo or salsa fresca. It’s a fresh and chunky salsa with raw ingredients. Every bite is a delight!

Ingredients Needed To Make Low-Carb Salsa

These ingredients are pretty much the standard ones you’ll find in traditional pico de gallo recipes. All the exact ingredient amounts are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

First, here is an overview of what you’ll need before you make it.

Tomatoes and Onions

The bulk of this keto salsa recipe is made up of tomatoes and onions! I normally try to use aroma tomatoes and white onions when making this salsa.

Spicy Peppers

As far as peppers go, I used a cubanelle pepper. This is a sweet pepper with only a tiny touch of heat. You can substitute it with poblano peppers, but use less of it since poblanos are spicier.

I also added some jalapeno peppers too! If you don’t like spicy foods, leave them out or just use less of them.

Seasoning

For the flavor, I added some garlic, cumin, cilantro, and some fresh lime juice. Of course, if you really don’t like cilantro, just leave it out!

Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.

Quick Tips:

  • Cut the tomatoes and remove the seeds. You can use any type of tomatoes, but it will take a lot more chopping if you use smaller tomatoes like grape or cherry tomatoes.
  • If you want this to be thinner, just add a portion of it to a blender. I prefer how it tastes with the chopped tomatoes and onions, so I just left it as it is.

How To Make Fresh Keto Salsa

This is one of the easiest recipes you will ever make. All you have to do is chop up the ingredients and then add them to a mixing bowl together.

That’s it! Make sure to cut up everything into really small pieces so that they fit on your low-carb chips easier.

After you mix everything together, squeeze some fresh lime juice on top and sprinkle some chopped cilantro. Talk about delicious!

What To Serve With Keto Salsa

Low-carb salsa is a classic appetizer for Mexican food nights. Besides the obvious keto tortilla chips, serve it with some sliced cucumbers, pork rinds, or cheese crisps. This tastes delicious with some fresh guacamole on the side too!

You can also serve any of your favorite Mexican recipes with it. One of my favorites is the Mexican taco casserole bake. It feeds an entire family without much additional effort.

On colder days, make some crock pot Mexican chicken soup for the main course. It’s creamy with a bit of heat.

Basically, anything that is mostly meat and veggies is a safe choice on the keto diet. Make a taco salad or some lettuce tacos for a fun Tex Mex meal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Salsa

Before I get to the recipe, here are some questions people often ask about fresh salsa.

Is salsa keto-friendly?

The reason this fits on a low-carb diet is that it has so much fiber. Fiber always decreases the amount of net carbs in a recipe.

In fact, you can add this salsa on top of some eggs or some fresh slices of avocado for a healthy snack or breakfast.

So yes, salsa can fit in a keto diet!

Is homemade salsa healthy?

Yes, since I used all fresh and whole ingredients, this is a very healthy recipe.

The tomatoes are packed with vitamin C, which is a huge immune system booster. The lime juice and onions are also excellent sources of vitamin C too.

Did you know that vitamin C is an antioxidant? That means it fights the free radicals that are responsible for cellular damage.

This recipe is also packed with fiber – which will give you a healthy gut.

What is the difference between pico de gallo and salsa?

Another name for pico de gallo is salsa fresco. It is a type of salsa. Pico is usually made with fresh, uncooked ingredients.

Traditional salsa is thinner with more liquid. Pico is chunkier. This recipe can definitely be referred to as a Pico De Gallo if you want.

How do you store fresh keto salsa?

Store fresh salsa in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

One very important note: do not store leftover salsa or pico de gallo if it has cilantro in it. The cilantro will change the texture and become less appetizing after just a few days.

Only add the fresh cilantro to the salsa that you know you are going to eat right away.

Can I add salsa to queso?

Yes, this salsa would taste amazing mixed into some spicy queso! Since this is a chunky fresh salsa, it will add a surprising texture to the salsa.

I suggest using a blender to make the salsa thinner before adding it to the queso. This way, it all mixes together better without biting into the large chunks of tomatoes or onions.

The Best Keto Salsa For Taco Tuesday!

This is one of my favorite low-carb snacks! I love dipping cucumber slices into a bowl of zesty and fresh salsa. Every single bite is full of flavor. From the sweet tomatoes to the spicy peppers and the earthy cilantro, there is a lot going on with this salsa.

Don’t forget to top it with some fresh lime juice! I just love the cilantro-lime combination and it really works with this easy recipe.

Notes

Store salsa in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days. However, it’s not recommended to store leftover salsa if it has cilantro in it. The cilantro can change the texture after a few days. So add the cilantro to salsa that will be eaten immediately. To change things up, try adding in some spicy queso. Just use a blender to make the salsa a little thinner before adding it to the cheese. That way, it mixes together better without tomato and onion chunks.
